On the edge of the grave - guided tour of the Western Cemetery

This year marks 48 years since I discovered the magic of Western Cemetery - and 10 years since I first took a tour out there. \ It needs to be celebrated. So for the rest of the year I will skip the fixed route and improvise with your help and suggestions through my absolute favorite place in Copenhagen. In addition, I also put the price down (for a while) to the paltry 100kr per head that I started with a decade ago. On November 2, 1870, the new, large cemetery for the poor was inaugurated in the countryside. Here on the edge between Valby, Vesterbro and Kongens Enghave there was plenty of space. Quite quickly it became the most used cemetery in Copenhagen, both social democratic notables, poets, artists and ordinary workers were laid to rest. Join us on a journey through a century and a half of Copenhagen's cultural history and meet, among other things, a visionary schoolteacher, a ditto postman, a drunk Swede, an unhappily in love Swede and all the other exciting destinies - or as many as we can now reach out of the hundreds of preserved burial sites with fascinating stories.

Come on an evocative hike under ancient trees, weathered stones and a bottomless lake of good stories. In the 265-year-old cemetery lie some of Danish history's greatest geniuses, crookiest existences and richest men and women buried. When it became too inhumane to continue burying the dead in the cemeteries of the enclosed town behind the ramparts - not to mention the fine ones who wanted to lie under the church floor - in 1760 Assistens cemetery was built in rural Nørrebro. Here are Hans Christian, Søren Sok, Uncle Danny, Natasha, French flu victims, Russian Cossacks, beer brewers, slave traders and countless others. And then here is beautiful.

Kierkegaard & Copenhagen - city walk

Discover Copenhagen through the story of one of the city's greatest spirits - the rich man's son Søren... “Lose for all things not the desire to go: every day I seek my daily well-being to and from every disease; I have given myself my best thoughts, and I know of no thought so heavy that one cannot escape from it.” This is how Søren Kierkegaard wrote in 1847 to his sick sister-in-law, Jette. Since 2017, the Wandering Story has been following in the footsteps of the world-famous philosopher, and in 2026 we will make it sad again. City walk at Christianshavn

Christianshavn is something very special. The urban walking cliché “where we stand, there was once water” applies to Christian d. 4. 's large-scale project. Here were some small islets and sandbanks - and now here is a district, perhaps the most idyllic and well-preserved in Copenhagen - and one of the most expensive. It hasn't always been that way. Get the story and join us behind the facades of the city on the water. We visit some of the most beautiful backyards and oldest civic houses in the city. Always on Vesterbro - local historical city walk in Copenhagen

Always on Vesterbro — this is how the answer sounded when Henry Emil Larsen in the years 1912-1916 periodically had to inform the police about his circumstances. That, of course, was a lie. He had lived several years in the murkiest streets of the Inner City, but apparently that didn't add up. On the whole, Henry had a somewhat free relationship with the facts. He often gave up addresses in which he had never (at least not officially) set his feet. He was soon working one place, soon the other, but never very long at a time, and in some places they had never heard of him, even though he had apparently worked there for years. One thing Henry was good at; he could charm the young ladies of the neighborhood. The maids threw themselves into his arms on the strip -- and just as quickly fled again. For there were many things that did not quite work out for the young Henry. Eventually the pressure got too much, and then what do you do? You can learn more about that -- as well as a good deal of the neighborhood's early history -- on this tour. It is a universal story about poverty and misery, love, urban development, but above all about drunkenness, adultery and stupidity. Guide on the city walk is Mads Kristian Mikkelsen, storyteller, city walker and school teacher - and Henry's great-grandson. The trip is based on barely a decade and a half of genealogy.
